Driving the Future of Rail
Fischbach & Moore is proud to play a key role in the modernization of Amtrak’s Southampton Yard Train Facility in Boston, where we are delivering the electrical scope for a new Maintenance & Inspection (M&I) Facility designed to accommodate Amtrak’s next generation Inter City Trainsets (ICT) and existing Acela fleets. The project is uniquely challenging, as the yard is one of Amtrak’s most heavily utilized facilities and must remain fully operational throughout construction.
Fischbach & Moore is responsible for a wide range of electrical components on this project, including:
General Yard and Facility Upgrades:
- Upgrading existing lighting and power distribution in the front yard.
- Providing lighting, power, and fire alarm improvements to existing maintenance buildings.
- Installing a new storage building, fuel pump building, and fire pump building with complete electrical and fire alarm fit-outs.
Substation and Power Distribution:
- Constructing a new electrical distribution building with 15 kV switchgear to serve the new M&I facility
- Replacing the outdoor substation at the existing Service & Inspection (S&I) Building
- Adding one double-ended substation inside the new M&I facility and two outdoor substations to power yard equipment and high mast lighting
- Removing and installing sections of the main yard catenary system
M&I Facility Systems:
- Power distribution for the new facility
- Lighting and lighting control systems
- Fire alarm installation
- Radio and bi-directional antenna systems
- Tele/data, security, and CCTV systems with a fiber optic backbone connected to the existing Amtrak facility
- Retractable overhead catenary system for train servicing
- Yard and building headend power cabinets to supply stationary train power
By modernizing Southampton Yard, Fischbach & Moore is fortifying one of Amtrak’s busiest facilities, ensuring dependable operations, and preparing for the future of high-speed rail.
