Powering Boston’s Transit Future
This large-scale modernization involves rebuilding and upgrading Codman Yard’s signal, communication, traction power, and general electrical systems, while maintaining partial storage capacity within the yard. The improvements are designed to increase the facility’s overall capacity, safety, and operational efficiency in support of the MBTA.
Fischbach and Moore’s role in modernizing Codman Yard includes:
- Traction Power:
- Supplying an added power source through the installation of a modular substation to serve 17 rebuilt tracks and 6 new storage tracks.
- Constructing a new utility bridge over Gallivan Boulevard to support 40 traction power conduits feeding into the yard.
- Installing more than 100,000 feet of FRE conduit across the yard.
- Deploying over 60 new wayside traction power switches, enabling flexible distribution of power from Ashmont Substation to Codman Yard as required by the MBTA.
- Signal Systems:
- Installing 9 new Alstom 5F switch machines to allow seamless movement between newly constructed tracks.
- Upgrading 7 existing signal units along the main line from Ashmont Station
- Installing over 40 switch and third rail heater cases with heating elements to ensure safe winter train operations by preventing snow and ice buildup.
- Constructing a new Central Instrument House (CIH) integrated with cycle test loops for real-time monitoring and testing of stored trains.
- Communications:
- Implementing an upgraded security system featuring new CCTV cameras, card readers, Wi-Fi connectivity, and secured entry gates.
- General Electrical:
- Installing multiple new transformers and a backup generator to provide yard and mainline lighting as well as power to the CIH, Wi-Fi system, and CCTV cameras.
- Setting up at least 5 new on-site work trailers for MBTA personnel.
By delivering these upgrades, Fischbach & Moore is enabling the MBTA to provide safer service, more reliable operations, and greater capacity for thousands of Boston’s daily riders.
