Upgrading for Reliability
To strengthen reliability, Marblehead Municipal Light Department is working with Fischbach & Moore and G. Greene Construction on critical upgrades to the Village 13 Substation. The scope of work includes installing new foundations to support a 23/13.2 kV switchgear building, setting two new 23/13.2 kV power transformers with associated foundations and containment systems, and completing extensive underground and electrical work. Crews will install 4,500 feet of below-grade conduit, 12,000 feet of power cable, and 147 power terminations.
The Village 13 Substation upgrades are being executed through a five-phase project plan that includes:
- Phase One: receiving and setting up the new switchgear building, including the installation of most associated duct banks.
- Phase Two: Pulling and terminating the new 23kV feeders into the switchgear building and cutting over the existing 23kV transformers to their new cubicles.
- Phase Three: Demolishing the existing 23 kV lattice structure to create space for new transformer pads and containment.
- Phase Four: Installing and energizing the new 13.2 kV system, including connections to the new power transformers and six existing circuits.
- Phase Five: Removing the existing 23/13.2 kV switchgear, transformers, and associated foundations.
With a scheduled completion at the end of 2025, this project demonstrates our expertise in managing high-voltage utility work with speed, reliability, and attention to detail.
